... it lies at the top of Portugal, as the nests are at the top of the trees so that the distance makes them more impossible and desirable.

 

Perhaps this is the best definition and motivations of Maria João and Manuel, who’s experience of urban and cosmopolitan life in the city of Lisbon (where they are from) made them head for the village of Formil, just 6 km away from the district capital, Bragança, at the foot of the Serra de Nogueira, where Nature in a pure state better coexists and harmonizes with the culture and traditions of the northeast of Trás-os-Montes.

 

In Formil, they’ve found a traditional and secular house, which they passionately recovered while maintaining the characteristics of a typical Trás-os-Montes house untouched. In this space that they called “Alformil”, they made their residence and a rural tourism unit consisting of six rooms, common room and garden, where the main objective is to receive those who visit them with the comfort and convenience of their own homes, combined with several traditions of the region.

 

Simultaneously, they’re recreated and transformed an old haystack, into a space dedicated to wine tasting and sale exclusively from the region of Trás-os-Montes and its sub-regions of Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês (see more here) and its harmonization with some products regional products such as smokehouse, cheese, olive oil and honey.

 

Alformil offers visitors the proximity of a district capital, Bragança, and the interaction of a rural village environment, with everything that characterizes both spaces: Nature, Tradition, Culture and Gastronomy, as well as it gives you complete freedom with with the means you prefer to discover this “Wonderful Kingdom”.
